MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: June 25

Spangenberg is back

Spangenberg helps lead the AZL to more walks than the real Padres get in more than a week. Portillo picks up his first win, and Bauers is the leader.

Day off for El Paso

For further reading on the El Paso Chihuahuas, see the El Paso Times.

Missions 1 – Tulsa Drillers 0 (10 innings)

Key Statistics RHP Bryce Morrow 7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, BB, 6 Ks; RF Hunter Renfroe 0-4, K; LF Yeison Asencio 2-4, RS' PH Reymond Fuentes 1-1, 2B, RBI.

Prospect Watch: In six games with the Missions, Renfroe is just 2-22 with one extra-base hit. Worst yet his last hit came a week ago. Oddly enough the strikeouts have not been the issue as he actually has a better strikeout/at-bat compared to Lake Elsinore. However his line drine percentage is down, of course six games is a way to small sample size to start freaking out. Renfroe did make two fantastic plays in the field including a diving catch in the gap to end the game.

Storm 2 – Inland Empire 66ers 11

Key Statistics RHP Zach Eflin 4 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, BB, 2 K; SS Diego Goris 1-4, 2B; 2B Benji Gonzalez 2-4, 2B, RS

Prospect Watch: Cody Hebner has outstanding stuff. He can throw in the mid to upper 90's with movement, and has good enough secondary pitches that he should be a dominant late inning reliever. However in his second year in Lake Elsinore, the stats haven't improved. He is still walking nearly 5 batters per 9, still striking out roughly a hitter an inning, but his BAA has gone from .207 last year to .258 this year.

TinCaps 9 – Dayton Dragons 4

Key Statistics RHP Erik Cabrera 5 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, BB, 4 Ks; 1B Jake Bauers 3-5, 2B, RS, 2 RBI; RF Franmil Reyes 2-5, 2 RS; C/DH Adolfo Reina 3-5, HR (3), 3 RS, 3 RBI.

Prospect Watch: As of today the MidWest League has a new leader in batting average. Drum roll please…. JAKE BAUERS!!! He became the leader not because of his third multi-hit game in a row, but because he finally collected enough at- bats to qualify. Now that he qualifies Bauers has a 44 point lead (that's not a typo) over second place Boog Powell (.335). He also leads the league in OBP and SLG… The trifecta!

Ems 0 – TriCity Dust Devils 1

Key Statistics RHP Michael Kelly 5 IP, H, R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K; SS Trea Turner 1-4; LF Yale Rosen 2-4, 2B

Prospect Watch: Its bad when the winning run is scored on an error, its even worse when the winning run is scored because of two errors, both by the pitcher. Outside of Michael Kelly forgetting how to throw to first, or pickoff a runner, he was fantastic. Kelly has now gone 10 straight innings without allowing an earned run. That streak is the longest of Michael Kelly's career, and longest since before he was a supplemental first round pick back in 2011. The most promising thing is that Kelly walked 47 in 56 innings last year… he has walked just 3 in 13.2 innings this year..

AZL Padres 16 – AZL Mariners 9

Key Statistics RHP Taylor Aikenhead 2 IP, 6 Ks; LF Jordan Paroubeck 3-4, 4 RS, RBI, 2 BB; DH Cory Spangenberg 1-4, 3B, 2 RS, 2 RBI, BB; CF Michael Gettys 2-3, 3B, 3 RS, 3 RBI, 3 BB.

Prospect Watch: Cory Spangenberg is back!! Yay for that! However the note of the game… The AZL Padres had 14 walks and 3 strikeouts!! That is more walks than the real Padres had over an entire week.
