MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: June 6

How much longer in the Cal League?

Jonathan Galvez leads El Paso to a victory but the Missions get smoked. Lake Elsinore keeps rolling and this time the TinCaps administer the beat-down.

Chihuahuas 6 - Reno Aces 4

Key Statistics:RF Jeff Francoeur 1-3, HR (11), RBI, BB; 1B Cody Decker 1-4, RBI, BB; 3B Jonathan Galvez 2-3, 2B, HR (5), 3 RBI; SS Tyler Greene 1-3, RBI, BB; RHP Billy Buckner (W, 4-2) 5.0 IP 8 H 2 R 2 ER 2 BB 3 Ks; RHP Hector Ambriz (S, 5) 1.0 IP 2 H R ER BB.

Prospect Watch: The Chihuahuas put four on the board in the fourth inning, led by a big three-run home run by Jonathan Galvez to beat Reno to break a two game losing streak...Galvez hasn't played second base this year and is now primarily a third baseman is hitting .306/.363/.542 and if his defensive range at third picks up he could have a chance...RF Jeff Francoeur's offensive numbers have really picked up since May 1, when he was hitting .198. He has hit eight home runs since then and has seen his OPS climb from .553 to .768. As with catcher Adam Moore, Francoeur's contract allows him to leave the Padres if another major league team shows interest...Ambriz is now five for five in save opportunities and has a 24/4 strikeout-to-base-on-balls ratio this season.

Frisco RoughRiders 8 - Missions 0

Key Statistics: CF Reymond Fuentes 2-4, 3B; RHP Matt Branham (L, 4-2) 5.0 IP 13 H 8 R 8 ER 2 BB K HR; RHP Leonel Campos 2.0 IP 2 H 3 Ks; RHP Jerry Sullivan 1.0 IP.

Prospect Watch:When Greg Maddux was pitching for the Padres he had an expression of when a pitcher, who wasn't having his best day, and had to stay out on the mound to take the pounding to save the bullpen; "Wear it." Well, last night Matt Branham got to "wear it" as he gave up five runs in the first three innings before four straight hits in the sixth chased him...The Missions were held to only three hits all game...Rymer Liriano (.276) is the only Missions‘ regular with a batting average above .275...Jerry Sullivan is having a nice year in the bullpen with a 1.61 ERA and is holding the opposition to a .203 batting average.

Storm 11 - Inland Empire 66ers 2

Key StatisticsCF Alberth Martiniez 1-5, 2B, 2 RBI, BB; SS Diego Goris 2-5; RF Hunter Renfroe 2-4, BB; C Dane Phillips 3-4, HR 92), 2 RBI; 3B Gabriel Quintana 2-5, RBI; LF Jeremy Baltz 2-5, 2 RBI; 2B/SS Benji Gonzalez 1-2, RBI; DH Corey Adamson 2-4, BB; RHP Joe Ross (W, 6-3) 6.0 IP 2 H R BB 7 Ks.

Prospect Watch:The Storm moved 11 games above .500 and three back of Lancaster in the Cal League South standings. They have been the Padres‘ best minor league club this season but if Hunter Renfroe and Joe Ross are called up as expected after the all-star break times might get a little lean with only Mallex Smith in Fort Wayne being a likely promotion candidate...Ross bounced back after three straight outings of giving up three or more runs. He has as much talent as any pitcher in the organization, its just a matter of how consistent he is with his off-speed and breaking pitches...In his first six games in June Renfroe's slash line is .308/.419/.423. If the walks keep coming up its going to be ok if he is averaging nearly a strikeout a game.

TinCaps 14 - Lake County Captains 4

Key StatisticsCF Mallex Smith 1-3, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SB (46) ; 2B Fernando Perez 2-5, 2 RBI, BB; RF Franmil Reyes 2-6, 2B, 2 RBI; DH Jake Bauers 2-3, RBI, 2 BBs, 2 SB (4); C Adolfo Reina 3-4, RBI, BB; SS River Stevens 2-5, 3B, HR, 4 RBI; 1B Luis Tejada 2-5, 2 RBI; LF Henry Charles 0-3, 2 BBs; RHP Ronald Herrera (W, 4-4) 5.1 IP 6 H 3 R 3 ER 2 BB 3 Ks 2 HR.

Prospect Watch: You never know what you are going to get with the TinCaps this year, one day they get beat by ten runs and the next they win by ten...Fort Wayne took advantage of three errors by the opposition and put up big innings in the fifth and seventh to snap out of a two game losing streak...As mentioned above, expect Mallex Smith to take his game to the Cal League by the all-star break with the probable promotion of Renfroe. In addition to his 46 stolen bases he also has five triples on the year...Coming into the game Jake Bauers had two stolen bases in five attempts, today doubled his season total. He must be hangin' with Mallex...Fernando Perez has slowed down a little since a big April but is still hitting .301 and seeing time at three different infield positions...3B Dustin Peterson made his twentieth error this season, nearly all of them have been on throws...Luis Tejada has hit much better than his .189 batting average in April with .317 in ten games in May and .400 in his first three in June.
