MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: May 24

El Paso splits a doubleheader. The Missions get another strong start from Jesse Hahn but don't get the offense. A big home run for Lake Elsinore sends them home with a victory and the TinCaps lose in extra innings.

Game 2

Chihuahuas 8 - Tacoma Rainers 2 7 innings

Key Statistics:CF Alex Castellanos 1-2, 2B, 2 BBs; SS Jace Peterson 1-2, HR (2), 3 RBI, 2 BB; 1B Tommy Medica 0-2, 2 BBs; LF Jake Goebbert 0-2, 2 BBs; RHP Michael Nix (W, 1-0) 6.0 IP 4 H R ER 4 Ks.

Prospect Watch:The Chihuahuas came back after losing the first game on some dink hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the nightcap...SS Jace Peterson, after going 0-4 with three strikeouts bounced back with a big day in the second game. Peterson, who has now been playing mostly shortstop, is hitting .327/.471/.577 in 17 games...RF Jeff Francoeur hit .196/.225/.330 in April, has been much better in May at .313/.333/.530 but Rymer Liriano is behind him and pushing in San Antonio...Nix was signed by El Paso yesterday and looked great in his first outing for El Paso.

Northwest Arkansas Naturals 4 - Missions 2

Key Statistics: RF Yeison Asencio 2-4, 2B; LF Adam Buschini 1-4 (HR(1), RBI; RHP Jesse Hahn 4.0 IP 2 H BB 2 Ks; RHP Devin Jones (L, 4-3) 5 H 4 R 3 ER K.

Prospect Watch:The Missions offense couldn't get anything going after they put up a season high 12 runs yesterday...Jesse Hahn, who is on a limited innings count this year, had his third strong outing. Hahn has now given up one earned run in his past three starts (11 innings)...Ascencio had his second straight multi-hit game today and has improved his batting average by over forty points in the last ten days.

Storm 6 - Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 3

Key StatisticsSS Diego Goris 3-5, HR (5), 4 RBI; CF Hunter Renfroe 2-4 HR (10), RBI, BB; 1B Luis Domoromo 2-4, 2B 2B Benji Gonzalez 1-3, BB; RHP Colin Rea (W, 5-2) 6.0 IP 5 H 5 Ks; RHP Cody Hebner 1.0 IP H 3 R 3 ER 2 BB 2 Ks HR; RHP Trevor Gott (S, 14) 1.0 IP K.

Prospect Watch:SS Diego Goris' big grand slam in the fifth inning was enough to send the Storm home victorious for the fourth time in five games...Renfroe is now tied for the organization lead in home runs with 10 and second in RBIs with 35...It's now been 43 games for Diego Goris and he is hitting .320/.339/.500 with 20 extra-base hits. It's time for everyone to start noticing...Colin Rea is turning into the type of pitcher that Padres' Director of Minor League Development always claimed he could be. In ten starts he has only given up 18 earned runs and is averaging just under a strikeout per inning with 42 strikeouts in 48.2 innings pitched. Throw out his first two starts of the year, where he gave up five earned runs and three and he's been even better.

Lansing Lugnuts 4 TinCaps 3 - 10 innings

Key Statistics CF Mallex Smith 2-4, BB; 3B Dustin Peterson 3-5, 2 2Bs, 2 RBI; LF Luis Tejada 2-3, SB (2); 1B Jake Bauers 1-4, BB, RBI; LHP Payton Baskette 5.0 IP 3 H 4 BB 3 Ks; RHP Tony Rizzotti (BS, 2) 1.2 IP 3 H 2 R 2 ER BB 3 Ks; RHP Tayron Guerrero (BS, 1) 1.0 IP 2 H R K; RHP Nick Mutz (L, 0-3) 2.0 IP 3 H R ER BB 3 Ks.

Prospect Watch:Two of the TinCaps better pitchers this season, Tayron Guerrero and Nick Mutz gave up the big hits as Fort Wayne lost in extra innings and tacked on two additional errors to bring their season total up to 93 errors in 48 games; although they are coming at a slower rate in May than they were in April...Jake Bauers is the youngest player on the TinCaps at 18 and I believe in the Midwest League. In his first 97 plate appearances he has a slash line of .326/.404/.453 with seven extra-base hits and a 11/13 base-on-balls to strikeout ratio. He has more hits (28) than games played (25) to go along with 16 RBI. That is not bad...Josh VanMeter dipped below the "Mendoza Line" with a .196 batting average and might be a candidate for Eugene when the Northwest League starts. Remember he is very young too and it is a big jump from the Arizona League...3B Dustin Peterson is tied for the organization lead in RBI with 35...Baskette has posted a good ERA this year at 3.53, he just needs to tighten up his strikeout-to-walk ratio at 25/19.
