MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: May 15

Renfroe struck the big blow for LE on Thursday

For once El Paso has trouble hitting while San Antonio always has difficulty scoring. Hunter Renfroe picks up a teammate and the TinCaps nearly come back.

Las Vegas 51s 4 - Chihuahuas 3

Key Statistics: 2B Jace Peterson 0-0, 5 BBsSB(1);RF Jeff Francoeur 2-3, HR(7), RBI, BB; C Adam Moore 1-3, 3B, RBI, BB; LF Travis Buck 1-3, BB; LHP Jason Lane (L, 3-4) 5.0 IP 9 H 4 R 4 ER 3 BB 2 K HR; RHP Jorge Reyes 1.0 IP H K.

Prospect Watch: A rare home loss for the Chihuahuas as they just couldn't generate enough offense for the start of their homestand...I don't know if I ever seen someone walk five times in a game, but Jace Peterson did as he pushed his on-base percentage from .391 to .500 after seven games in AAA. Five of his seven games have been at second, one at third and only a single one at shortstop. It appears if Headley leaves next year he could be in line for the everyday second base job as Jedd Gyorko moves to third...After a good start, Jason Lane has allowed four or more runs in four of his last five starts.

Corpus Christi Hooks 3 - Missions 2 11 innings

Key Statistics: 2B Casey McElroy 0-3, 2 BBs; C Austin Hedges 2-3, HR (3), RBI, BB; RHP Odrisamer Despaigne 3.0 IP 2 H R ER 2 BB 6 Ks; RHP James Needy 6.0 IP 4 H R ER 3 BB 6 Ks; RHP Leonel Campos (L, 0-1) 2.0 IP 3 H R ER BB K.

Prospect Watch:Despite some great pitching a lack of offense, as has been the case most of the season, sank the Missions in extra-innings. Cuban signee Odrisamer Despaigne made his professional debut and struck out six in three innings, which was impressive. The Padres signed the 27-year-old to a $1 million dollar bonus and expect to see him in San Diego some time this year. For more on Odrisamer check out Corey Brock's story on him in early May.... Lost a little bit in the story above is James Needy, who had his second strong outing of the season. In his past two starts he has gone six innings and only allowed a single run...Austin Hedges has pushed his average to a season-high .288 and is hitting .419/.500/.721 in May.

Storm 6 - Inland Empire 66ers 5 10 innings

Key StatisticsRF Hunter Renfroe 2-5, 2B, HR(8), RBI; SS Diego Goris 2-4, 2B, HR (4), 2 RBIs; 3B Gabriel Quintana 2-5, 2B, RBI; 1B Duanel Jones 1-4, RBI, BB; DH Luis Domoromo 2-4, 3B; RHP Matthew Shepherd 4.2 IP 8 H 4 R 4 ER 2 BB 2 K; RHP Bryce Morrow 3.1 IP 5 Ks; RHP Trevor Gott (BS, 2)( W, 2-2) 1.0 IP 2 H R ER BB; RHP Ben Paulus (S, 1) 1.0 IP H BB 2 Ks.

Prospect Watch:Trevor Gott, who is second in the organization in saves with 10, blew his second save opportunity this season with two outs in the ninth inning but Hunter Renfroe picked him up in the top of the tenth when he greeted the new Inland Empire pitcher with a home run...Renfroe is third in the organization in home runs and second in RBI with 28. Twenty-one of his 42 hits have been for extra-bases but he also has 50 strikeouts in 174 plate appearances....With Adam Moore having a strong season in El Paso the Padres got another good minor league pick up in shortstop Diego Goris, 23, who is hitting .328/.352/.522.

South Bend Silver Hawks 5 - TinCaps 4

Key Statistics CF Mallex Smith 3-5, 2 SB(28); 3B Dustin Peterson 1-4, 2B, 4 RBIs, BB; RHP Walker Weickel (L, 1-5) 4.2 IP 5 H 5 R 4 ER 5 BB K; RHP Tony Rizzotti 2.1 IP 2 H K.

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps made it interesting when third baseman Dustin Peterson hit a three-run double with two outs in the ninth to bring Fort Wayne within one but unfortunately he also made the last out of the game when he tried to stretch it into a triple. If there is a baseball axiom about not making the first and last out of an inning at third I'm pretty sure there is also one about not making the last out of the game there too...In five of his eight starts Weickel has given up three or more runs...Mallex Smith Watch: He now has 28 stolen bases (28 for 36) in 36 games and has pushed his slash line up to .289/.374/.396.
