MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: August 3

A tough night for the system as only the Storm and the AZL Padres come out on top. It's been a good year for LE's James Needy and there are some interesting position prospects in the AZL this year.

Nashville Sounds 10 T-Pads 6

Key Statistics: 2B Dean Anna 4-4, 2B(37), HR(9),RBI, BB; RF Mike Wilson 2-4, RBI; LHP Jason Lane 4.1 IP 8 H 5 R 5 ER 3 Ks, 3 HRs; RHP Kevin Quackenbush (L, 6-2) 1.0 IP 4 H 4 R 2 ER BB K.

Prospect Watch: "Dean Watch" - .336/.415/.517 with 37 doubles, five triples and nine home runs for the season and he hits nearly as well on the road as at home. Can we put him on the forty man roster now and give him a shot? Tonight he finished a triple short of the cycle...Converted outfielder Jason Lane had a tough giving up three bombs in four innings...Jaff Decker was out of the lineup for the third straight game..Kevin Quackenbush has been much more hittable in AAA with a 4.37 ERA and a 26/14 K/BB ratio.

Frisco RoughRiders 3 Missions 2 11 innings

Key Statistics 2B Cory Spangenberg 2-3, 2B, 3B, BB; CF Reymond Fuentes 1-4, HR(6), RBI, BB; C Austin Hedges 0-5, 2 Ks; LHP Juan Oramas 5.0 IP 3 H R ER 2 BBs 6 KS; LHP Clay Zavada (L, 0-1) 0.2 IP R ER 2 BB.

Prospect Watch: Cory Spangenberg continues his seven game hitting streak with a pair of extra-base hits..Austin Hedges is still hitless after his second AA start..Reymond Fuentes has slowed down in the second half - .247/.284/.340 as compared to the first .332/.419/.472.

Storm 6 Inland Empire 3

Key Statistics CF Travis Jankowski 2-3, 2 BBs, SB(64); RF Kyle Gaedele 3-4; LF Jeremy Baltz 1-3, 3 RBIs; 3B Duanel Jones 3-4, RBI; RHP James Needy (W, 7-4) 5.1 IP 7 H R ER BB 5 Ks.

Prospect Watch: After battling injuries for most of his career starter James Needy has proved his durability this year by making 22 starts and throwing 108 innings. His peripheral numbers, hits/innings pitched, strikeouts/walks, aren't going to blow anyone away but he does eat innings and a 3.67 ERA in the Cal League is very good...Jankowski has now stolen 64 bases in 77 attempts. If he can add a little more power he is going to really move up the prospect ladder...In 40 games Jeremy Baltz has 30 RBIs.

Lansing Lugnuts 5 TinCaps 3

Key Statistics: DH Mallex Smith 1-2, 2 BBs, SB(48); CF Alberth Martinez 1-4, HR(8),2 RBIs; 2B Maxx Tissenbaum 2-4, RBI; RHP Bryan Rodriguez (L, 2-5) 5.2 IP 8 H 5 R 5 ER 3 BBs, 2 Ks.

Prospect Watch With the exception of Tucson, it seems like everyone the Padres' organization throw in center field can steal a bag. Mallex is second in the organization with 48 stolen bases...Randy Smith has always been a big fan of Alberth Martinez's ability in his first five games since coming back from injury he has eight hits in five games with two doubles and two home runs.

Tri-City Dust Devils Emeralds 5

Key Statistics: LF Malquiel Brito 2-5, HR(1), 3 RBIs; SS Felipe Blanco 2-4, 2B, BB; RF Hunter Renfroe 0-5, RBI, SB(2); RHP Josh Richardson (L, 1-1) 1.2 IP 3 H R ER BB 2 Ks.

Prospect Watch While it is nearly a given that Hunter Renfroe will move up to Fort Wayne he does have some interesting home/road splits in very small samples. In the twelve games he has played in Eugene he is hitting .408/.442/.755 and for ten games on the road he has hit ..143/.156/.238..the Emeralds are really struggling at the plate with the team only hitting .225/.301/.319....One of the bright spots at the plate has been center fielder Ronnie Richardson, who is back for his second tour of the Northwest League, is hitting .297/.458/.458.

AZL Padres 11 - AZL Reds 6

Key Statistics LF Rod Boykin 2-5; Franchy Cordero 2-5, 2 RBIs; 1B Jake Bauers 3-4, 2 2Bs, BB; RHP Christian Miller 2.2 IP 3 H 3 R 3 ER 4 Ks.

Prospect Watch: 1B Jake Bauers had his fifth straight multi-hit game.During the streak his batting average has improved from .193 to .268...Franchy Cordero, the 6'3" shortstop keeps hitting. Cordero is now at .339/.391/.496 for the season. While the AZL is a much better place to hit than the Northwest League and the competition is much less look for many of the AZL Padres to make a serious run for the opening day spots on the TinCaps in 2014. 2013 high school draft picks Bauers, Dustin Peterson, Josh VanMeter are beginning to hold their own in the league.
