MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: April 14

San Antonio's pitching staff had an unusual hiccup, giving up nine runs, but the offense exploded for 11 runs in the fifth and rolled to victory. Zach Eflin cruised after a rough first inning. Tucson and Elsinore continue to scuffle.

Fresno Grizzlies 11 Tucson Padres 6

Key Statistics: 2B Jonathan Galvez 2-4, 2B, HR (1); 1B Brandon Allen 1-4, HR (1), 3RBI; RHP Keyvius Sampson 4IP, 6H 4ER, 2K, 4BB

Prospect Watch: Nick Vincent's rough start to 2013 continued as the righty, who was a key part of the Padres bullpen last summer, gave up three runs, including a pair of homers, in his inning of work. After missing most of big league camp with pain in his forearm, the 26-year-old from Ramona has scuffled in Tucson. Vincent has now given up runs in three of four appearances. … In his first appearance in the Padres organization, journeyman first baseman Brandon Allen blasted a three-run homer. The 27-year-old slugger, who signed after being released by the Rangers at the end of spring training, now has 149 career minor league homers over parts of 10 seasons. … Keyvius Sampson now owns an 8.53 ERA over only 6.2 innings in his first two starts. When the 22-year-old righty's fastball straightens out, he's in trouble against advanced hitters.

San Antonio Missions 15 Tulsa Drillers 9

Key Statistics: RF Reymond Fuentes 2-3, HR(2), BB; 1B A.J. Kirby-Jones 3-5, 2B, 4RBI, 2R; LF Everett Williams 2-4, BB, 3R, 2RBI

Prospect Watch: Everett Williams continues his hot start, collecting his fourth multi-hit game in eight starts. Last July in Elsinore was the only other time in the 2009 second-rounder's career that he's put together a stretch like this. … A.J. Kirby-Jones, who looks as much like a slugging first baseman as possible, had a double among his three hits. The other part of the Tyson Ross trade over the winter, Kirby-Jones has massive raw power but hasn't been able to translate it into game situations as much as he'd like in the past.

Inland Empire 66ers 6 Lake Elsinore Storm 3

Key Statistics: LF Kyle Gaedele 1-3, BB, SB (4); CF Travis Jankowski 1-3, 2B, BB, R; LHP Brandon Alger 5IP, 8H, 3R, 1ER, 2K, 0BB

Prospect Watch: Through his first two stateside seasons, Yeison Asencio has demonstrated a remarkable ability to barrel the ball, even swinging at balls off the plate. However, his super-aggressive approach has led to nine strikeouts, against only one walk, in his first 44 plate appearances for the Storm. At the same time, his last five hits have all gone for extra bases, and he's slugging .605 so far. … Second baseman Cory Spangenberg sat out a second consecutive game after diving awkwardly in Friday night's contest. The speedster will likely sit out Monday as well, but should be back on the field quickly.

Ft. Wayne TinCaps 5 Lake County Captains 4

Key Statistics: CF Brian Adams 3-4, 2 2B, 2R; CF Corey Adamson 2-4, 2B, 2R, SB (4); RHP Zach Eflin 5IP, 2H, 2ER, 2K, 2BB;

Prospect Watch: Zach Eflin walked the first two batters he faced, setting up the Captains' two first-inning runs on a one-out single. But after that hiccup to start the game, the supplemental first-rounder hit his stride, yielding just one additional infield single. Eflin, who turned 19 last week, has given up seven hits in eight innings of work. … Like last year, the TinCaps feature a college football player who is learning how to turn remarkable athletic tools into baseball skills. Outfielder Brian Adams, previously a wide receiver for the Kentucky Wildcats, is slugging .600 so far, hinting at the raw talent that's there. However, he also has nine strikeouts and no walks in his first eight games, reminding us of what he'll need to improve on. … There may not be anyone in the game who can melt down the way Tayron Guerrero can. The hard-throwing righty, who became a pre-season darling of several national prospect writers, came out for his second inning of work and walked four straight hitters – complete with a pair of wild pitches - before giving way. The 22-year-old has issued eight free passes in 3.2 innings of work.
