There will be a mix of new and old faces on the coaching staffs for the Oakland A's two US short-season affiliates: the Vermont Lake Monsters and the Arizona Rookie League A's.
Vermont will be led by manager Rick Magnante, who returns to that post for a third season. Magnante has been a manager for 10 seasons in the minor leagues. From 2006-2010, he was the manager of the A's short-season affiliate in Vancouver. He has also served as a scout in the A's system for several years.
Magnante will have former major league reliever Craig Lefferts as his pitching coach. "Lefty" spent the past two seasons as the pitching coach for High-A Stockton. He has been a pitching coach in the A's system for 11 years.
Former A's prospect Lloyd Turner will make his coaching debut as the hitting coach for the Lake Monsters. The speedy Turner was selected in the 16th round of the 2002 draft by Oakland out of Kennesaw State. Turner spent six seasons in the A's system, playing at every level from short-season A to Triple-A. He was let go by the A's after the 2007 season and spent the next five seasons playing in the independent Atlantic League.
Toshi Nagahara will be the Lake Monsters' athletic trainer. He was the AZL A's trainer in 2012.
Marcus Jensen will once again serve as the manager of the AZL A's, while also holding the position of A's minor league coordinator of catchers. Jensen guided the AZL A's to the Arizona Rookie League title game last season.
Carlos Chavez will join the A's coaching staff for the first time, serving as the AZL A's pitching coach. The longtime minor league pitcher was a draft pick of the Baltimore Orioles out of New Mexico Junior College in 1992. He spent 13 seasons pitching both in affiliated and independent minor league baseball. Chavez spent half of the 2000 season pitching in the A's organization for High-A Visalia. He pitching for High-A Stockton as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers' organization in 1997.
Juan Dilone will serve as the AZL A's hitting coach for a fifth season. Dilone, a native of the Dominican Republic, played in the A's system from 1991 through 1997.
Chris Lessner will be the A's AZL team trainer. He has been a trainer in the A's organization for 20 years.
