MadFriars' Chat:Jaques Jones

Peterson has been one of the stars for Jones

FORT WAYNE -- After a ten year major league career former San Diego High Cavers star Jacques Jones decided to hang them up. After a few years away from baseball he still wanted to be involved in the game and decided to take a position with the Padres as their hitting coach in Low-A with Fort Wayne.

We caught up with Jacques at the end of April to talk about some of his pupils and how he is adjusting to his new role.

What has Donavan Tate done well this year and what does he need to work on?

Jacques Jones: He needs to use the whole field a little more and when he pulls the ball it needs to be with more authority. Other than that I think he's on the right path.

How about Jace Peterson a former two sport star who is playing more baseball now than he has before in his life?

Jacques Jones: Jace is another guy that can get a little pull happy but recently he has been hitting the ball more where its pitched and using the whole field. In the field he's been doing well.

He's still learning how to be a baseball player but when he's on the field his athletic ability really begins to take over.

Austin Hedges has been hitting better than most people thought. What do you see in him?

Jacques Jones: He's starting to flatten out his swing and driving the ball to all fields. I don't see what they meant about he wasn't an offensive catcher. He certainly looks like an offensive catcher to me.

Another player that has done is Travis Whitmore. He looks like he can play all over the infield as well as hit.

Jacques Jones: Travis may be our best infielder. He's a pull guy but who is starting to stay inside the ball and take it to left with backspin. He's taken off.

You had a long major league career. What made you decide to get back in the game?

Jacques Jones: Just passing down things that I've learned and that people have taught me. I've always enjoyed talking about the game and teaching it to my teammates and have my teammates teach it to me.

I felt that it is only right for me to pass it on.

I saw you at spring training and here and you always have a smile on your face.

Jacques Jones: Yeah I don't have to hit any more sliders or splitters or when someone hits 97.

I'm excited everyday I wake up.
