MadFriars' Farm Report April 16
Mark Hardy

Posted Apr 17, 2012

Up and down day for the #1 ranked farm system in all of baseball. Mark Hardy and the Storm dominated Stockton, and the Missions scored 9 runs in a 3 inning stretch as they crushed NW Arkansas 10-4. On the other side Tuscon, Fort Wayne, and the Missions in game 1 had trouble with poor defense and lack of hitting with RISP as they fell.

Salt Lake Bees 6 – T-Pads 2

Key Stats: Ryan Kelly 2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K; Evereth Cabrera 2-4, RS, E (1); Matt Clark 2-4 RBI

Salt Lake City, Utah Greg Gonzalez made a spot start for the Tucson Padres Monday, his first appearance at the Triple-A level. Gonzalez was filling in for Casey Kelly, who was placed on the 7-day DL with elbow soreness Monday. After pitching well in his first two innings, Gonzalez allowed five runs on seven hits in the third and Salt Lake cruised to a 6-2 win. The Padres two runs came on a Matt Clark RBI single and on a throwing error by Bees outfielder Ryan Langerhans.

After Gonzalez departed, the T-Pads bullpen was excellent. Eddie Kunz had his best appearance with Tucson, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings. Ryan Kelly threw two scoreless frames after Kunz for his second scoreless outing in as many days. Alex Hinshaw blanked the Bees in the eighth, at times touching 96 miles per hour on the stadium radar gun.

The Padres lost three of four in the series in Salt Lake and now have a 3-9 record. Tucson outfielder Blake Tekotte went 1-for-4 with a double and now has a ten-game hitting streak.

Game 1: Missions 4 – NW Arkansas 5

Key Stats: Robbie Erlin 4 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K; J. Decker 0-2, RS, 2 BB, SB (1); Carlos Sosa 1-1, 2B, 2 BB, RS; Jedd Gyorko 1-4, RBI

A costly error by Jedd Gyorko led to 2 unearned runs, which proved to be the difference in a 1 run loss. The Missions climbed to within 1 run in the final inning when Jaff Decker led off with a walk, stole 2nd, and scored on an RBI single by Gyorko, but Freiman and Rincon would fly out to end the game.

Game 2: Northwest Arkansas Naturals 4 - Missions 10

Key Stats: Oramas 5 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 K; Jeudy Valdez 2-5, 3B, 2 RS, 2 RBI, 2 E (6); Nate Freiman 2-5, 2B, 2 RBI; Jason Hagerty 2-3, RS, BB, C Decker 1-2, HR (4), RBI,2 BB

After falling behind 3-0 early after 2 more errors, the Missions rebounded scoring 9 runs from the 3rd through 5th. Missions benefited from 8 free passes in only 7 innings, 4 of which to Jedd Gyorko. 8 different Missions scored a run, 7 different Missions had at least 1 hit, and 5 different players had at least 1 RBI. Missions improved to 5-6 with the win.

Lake Elsinore Storm 4 – Stockton Ports 0

Key Stats: Mark Hardy 6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K; Matt Branham 2 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 4 K; Cory Spangenberg 1-3, BB, SB (4); Rymer Liriano 2-4, 2 RBI, CS (3)

Mark Hardy faced the Ports at the Diamond in Lake Elsinore for his 1st start of the year, and did not fare so well, giving up 4 ER in 5 innings with only 2 K. This time Hardy got the last laugh. Hardy and the Storm pitching staff completely dominated the Stockton offense on Monday night. In fact a Ports runner did not reach 3rd until 26 home outs had already been recorded.

Storm did not get on the board until the 6th inning when they recorded back to back to back singles after a leadoff error. Williams would hit a sac fly scoring Domoromo giving the Storm a 3-0 lead. The Storm would tack on the final run in the 8th after a 1 out walk to Domoromo. He then stole 2nd and came home on an RBI single by Liriano. The Storm have now won 2 in a row and improved to 4-7 on the year.

Fort Wayne 3 – Dayton Dragons 9

Key Stats: Frank Garces 4.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 6 BB, 3 K; John Barbato 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K; Michael Kelly 2 IP,3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K; Kyle Gaedale 2-4, 2B, HR (1), 2 RBI

Fort Wayne, Ind. The Fort Wayne TinCaps returned home after eight days away from Parkview Field, but suffered their fourth straight loss, a 9-3 defeat at the hands of the Dayton Dragons on Monday night. The TinCaps attacked early and led 1-0 on a second-inning solo home run from Kyle Gaedele, but the Dragons scored three runs in the fifth to take the lead. Dayton tacked on one run in the seventh, two in the eighth and three in the ninth en route to the series-opening victory.

Fort Wayne (3-8) starter Frank Garces worked his shortest outing of the season, tossing four and one third innings, allowing three runs, two earned, and issuing six walks. Although Garces walked four batters in the third inning, he did not allow a run in that frame. However in the fifth, Garces was chased for the night.

The 22-year-old allowed a leadoff double to Dayton’s Kyle Waldrop, and then walked Junior Arias. Dragons catcher Nick O’Shea laid down a sacrifice bunt, which was pounced on by Fort Wayne first baseman Zach Kometani. His throw to third base, attempting to retire the lead runner, sailed wide of third baseman Duanel Jones, and two runs came into score on the play as O’Shea ended up at third base. Jerfy Sierra was next to the plate, and O’Shea scored on a balk during Sierra’s at bat. Garces (0-1) was replaced later in the frame by John Barbato.

Dayton (5-6) added a single run in the seventh, two runs in the eighth, and three in the ninth on a bases-loaded triple by Waldrop. Dragons starter Justice French (2-1) worked six innings for the win. He allowed two earned runs on four hits, while walking three and striking out two.

The TinCaps got multi-hit efforts from Gaedele, Travis Whitmore and Matt Colantonio, who all finished with two hits each.
