Minor League Recap, April 8th
Zach Cates

Zach Cates showed fans in Fort Wayne why they might have one of the best rotations in baseball, Casey Kelly makes his Mission's debut, and 2 games decided in the final AB.

AAA Tucson falls 3-5

Considering Tuscon and Colorado Springs scored a combined 33 runs yesterday, maybe they were just tired. Will Inman made his first start in nearly 9 months, and was far and away better than Leblanc was yesterday. Inman went 5 strong giving up only 1 run on 4 hits, 0 BB, and 4 K. Sadly the offense and bullpen could not give him the win he deserved. Greg Burke, Randy Flores, and Scott Munter gave up 4 runs in the final 2 innings as the Padres fell 3-5

Durango, Clark, and Forsythe each had a single and a RS. The Padres went a combined 0-9 with RISP

AA San Antonio lost in 11 innings, 4-5

Casey Kelly made his Padres debut tonight for San Antonio. Sadly he was unimpressive. Kelly gave up 3 ER on 5 hits in just 4.1 IP. He only had 1 K. Kelly threw 83 pitches, 54 strikes in his brief outing.

The Missions had plenty of chances to break the game wide open but failed to find that clutch hit until, down by 2 in the 8th until Cody Decker hit a clutch 2 out, game tieing 2 run HR to tie the game at 4. The game would go into extras thanks to some nice game pitching by Spense (got out of a 2nd and 3rd no out jam he created), and Italiano (2 IP, 3 K). The Missions would put multiple runners on in both the 10th and 11th but would fail to score. Finally in the bottom of the 11th the Naturals got a walk off RBI single off pitcher Colt Hynes (1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K). Missions fall in 11 4-5

Blake Tekotte (2-6, 2B), James Darnell (2-5, 2B, RS, BB), Cody Decker,(2-5, HR (1), 2 RBI), and Ali Solis (2-5, RS) all had multi hit games for the Missions. Missions went 3-14 with RISP and left a staggering 12 runners on base.

A+ Lake Elsinore wins 5-4

Storm have always had problems with San Jose, so when San Jose scored twice in the 6th and again in the 7th to take a 4-3 lead, it looked like game over for the Storm. Fast forward to the bottom of the 9th. Hagerty leads off with a single, Rincon walks, and Valdez bunted them over. A wild pitch would score Hagerty from 3rd, and with 1 out and Rincon and 3rd, Liriano would hit a line drive single to right for the walk off victory. 5-4

Jose De Paula pitched well for the Storm. He went 5 innings allowing only an uneraned run on 5 hits, 0 BB, 2 K. Jason Hagerty reminded everyone why he should have been the MWL MVP. In addition to scoring the game tieing run, he went 3-4, 2B, 2 RS. Eric Patterson, on rehab, played CF and went 0-2, BB, SB. Rymer Liriano went 2-4, RS, 3B, 2 RBI in the win for the Storm

A Fort Wayne wins 5-1

It is hard to match perfection, but that was Zach Cates task tonight in Fort Wayne. Cates was every bit up to the task. Cates went 5.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K, including striking out the first 5 hitters of the game. The only run Cates allowed was surrendered after Cates left the game by Mark Hardy. That RBI single allowed by Mark Hardy was the only hitter Hardy would allow on base the rest of the game pitching the final 3.1 IP, 1 H, 3 K.

Despite the great pitching performance by Cates, South Bend's pitcher Zach Green matched him pitch for pitch. When Green left, the Tin Caps started to tee off. Donavan Tate had his first Tin Cap multi hit game going 2-4, RBI, but was CS both times on base. Wes Cunningham (1-3, RS, 2B, RBI) and Tommy Medica (1-3, RS, RBI) each had a run and an RBI in a 3 run 7th that put the game away for Fort Wayne. Tin Caps win 5-1
