Alberto Gonzalez, 27, hit .247 (46-for-186) with eight doubles, a triple, five RBI and 19 runs scored in 114 games played last season for the Nationals. In 25 games this Spring with Washington he has hit .377 (20-for-53) with seven runs scored. He made 37 starts in 2010, including 17 at shortstop and 10 at second base. Over parts of four Major League seasons with the New York Yankees (2007-08) and Nationals (2008-10), Gonzalez has hit .253 (150-for-592) with 32 doubles, four triples, two home runs, 49 RBI, 66 runs scored and 30 walks in 276 games played.
Erik Davis, 24, combined to go 14-3 with a 3.52 ERA (56 ER/143.1 IP) with 133 strikeouts against 48 walks in 27 games started between Single-A Lake Elsinore, Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A Portland last season. A 13th round selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, he has gone 32-9 with a 3.49 ERA (114 ER/293.2 IP) and 278 strikeouts against 99 walks in 73 games, 51 starts, over three minor league seasons in the Padres organization.
Mike Baxter, 26, had surgery on March 22 by Dr. Lorenzo Pacelli at the Scripps Clinic to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb. In 17 games this Spring he hit .370 (10-for-27) with two home runs, four RBI and eight runs scored. The outfielder made his Major League debut for the Padres last season after hitting .301 (145-for-482) with 18 home runs, 72 RBI and 89 runs scored in 136 games played for Triple-A Portland.
